Glad I found this piece. I've been staring at the frozen mud at my feet for a couple of weeks looking for what I found here. I guess we all look for the return of life to the land as we might look for the lost lover who quit our company five months ago in a frost fit. Glad you are so far along with your reconciliation. I've been writing about winter's resignation and skunk cabbage, taking what meager comfort I could find there. I'm happy to know Virginia has some Connecticut April in its current inventory.
(I'm adding you to my blogroll.)

Heck - for all I know, we may have flowers in full bloom, too. I just can't see them because of all the snow on top of them. (I did dig down the other day and got visual confirmation that our spring bulbs are in fact growing.)

Your spring may seem late in the mountains of Virginia but imagine if you had to wait until May like we do here in New England.

I really appreciated your description of the changes on your land over the last decade. Ever think of planting native grasses rather than european field grasses? Just an idea.
