Spinelessly Yours

Just a quick mention that Cafe Spinless is now serving all your invertebrate favorites. Drop by and order something tasty. This installment of Circus of the Spineless has a little of everything--except vertebrae, of course. There's even a Fragments post of the butterfly flavor.

Fred,
there are these tasty looking little black snail-like things in Greasy Creek on the Floyd/Carroll County line. Lots of them, strewn around on the rocks in 12-18" of water at a particularly unique (geologically) stretch of the stream. I've long wondered if they are really snails, or instead are freshwater mussels. And in either event, whether to eat them or instead declare them a rare thing to be protected by whatever semblance of protection now remains under the Endangered Species Act. Any advice--either on taxonomy or the culinary arts? When I'm next up there I can take pics if that would help, as I imagine it would..
Richard
PS Love your site, which Pratie turned me on to, keep up the Great Work, check out book of same name by Thomas Berry in case you haven't read it and need reconfirmation of the importance of what you are doing....
