Barter: Better Business
Floyd in the news: Finally, this AP story someone forwarded to me out of the Richmond paper the other day is available in a web link. I've heard some say they regret Floyd is portrayed as such a quirky backwater in this piece. I don't think I agree. We have our peculiarities. We even have our eccentrics. But hey: given what's become of NORMAL lately, do YOU want to be centric?
Read the piece in USA Today.

I was just stopping by to tell you about this neat article that was in my local (very local) newspaper last night and surprise, surprise, you had already posted a link. I guess I should have known since it was an AP story. I was surprised to find it though as it is a local paper and rarely even mentions things in Boston...But when I read it, I thought, Floyd?? Floyd?? where have I heard that---ahhhh, I know - from Fred in Floyd!! So, see what a service you provide?? I never would have read any further if it were not for you and your blog!!

Wow. Thanks for posting this, Fred. I would have missed it otherwise. It's all true by my account. (But just once I would like to see an article on Floyd that resists the urge to use the word "tie dye.") Years ago we had an annual "Barter Faire" in Floyd. I'm at my sister Kathy's (http://www.ben-gal.tripod.com) today. I'm at her daughter's computer and she's at hers. We are blogging side by side! Next, a game of scrabble (offline).

Scrip. Now there's a brilliant idea...for someone who wants to scam another. How many events involving scrip have you broke even on? My experience from sporting events is that I either have too much scrip(money I can never use) or not enough to get what I want. End result is that I lose money to someone else's gain.
The reason scrip is a horrible idea is that scrip limits a consumer's choices because it isn't widely accepted for all goods. Even if it were globally accepted, the other problem of scrip is its denomination, in that it is too broad. Example: What if I want $0.50 of something but my scrip is denominated in $1 units? It's just another angle to skim off of others, and it's no surprise to me from which element of Floyd it originated.
