Good Book

We're ordering a copy. Not that Good Book, but sort of on a related thread of commentary. It's called God's Politics, and it's not what you'd think in the present incarnation of God as Republican.

Jim Wallis of Sojourners doesn't deny the importance of "moral values" as issues of public concern. He does, however, insist we go beyond the hot-button issues of right-to-life and same-sex marriage. And from what I've seen, he is able to bring this discussion to prominence in an even-handed and respectful way. His book and the discussions it is promoting are drawing out of hiding those of us who have become disgusted with the lack of voices from anywhere but the right-most edges of the faith--from those who have their bully pulpit now in this administration. More summary about the book, here.

You can watch Mr. Wallis appearance on the John Stewart show. We heard him also a couple of weeks back on Fresh Air.

I heard Jim Wallis on "On Point" last week and also plan to read his book. It was the first time, in a long time, that I was able to stomach listening to someone of faith on the radio. Not only did I stomach it, but I truly appreciated listening to him. Even if I don't necessarily share his faith I agree that there is common ground upon which matters of great concern can be discussed and solutions found. It really is too bad that the powers that be don't feel the same.

I'm afraid you're right Amy, both sides have too much invested in their positions. In an evenly split country "the powers that be" are both parties...our problems and solutions are of little concern... it's about power, the getting and holding on to. It's all about them.

I heard a well known political operative remark on a Sunday talk show that his party would never touch social security, they needed social security to win elections. I was a little stunned that it was said so baldly and matter of factly, but there it was.

Unfortunately I suspect devout Christians of all denominations and political points of view will lose the most, for history has shown that once the wheels of religious hatred begin to turn they grind exceedingly fine.

I heard the Fresh Air show. He made some great points.
