I visualized this image in its final state when I happened across it yesterday, and I ran and got my camera. A few minutes can make all the difference. It says something to me about organic interconnectedness and complexity. I'd be happy if you'd help me with a name from the list above (my 4:30 a.m. coffee-induced word-ramble) or some combination of your own.

Or, if you're feeling creative this morning (I'm not yet), could you write a verse or mind-wandering free association paragraph using the image as a catalyst? Willing to share it?

God's Root.

It brings vividly to mind Part 3 of a poem I wrote for a words/drumming/dance production being developed for showing this April in Algona, Iowa:

Tangle and
web and

marvel of
roots.

Loom of
mushroom,

wobble
of rock

and dirt, net
of all things

caught

in green things
rising, all things

turned

in summer's
sweep, all things

tangled and caught
and turned and

woven.

Braided, twined,
plaited,

interconnected.

All things
spun and bobbed,

shuttled and shoved,
warped and woofed,

woven.

Minerals and
light, light

and water, water
and earth, earth

and life and green
fuse burning.

Turning twisting
twining.

All a knotted
oneness.

The tree and the
squirrel in the tree -

Which is the dancer,
which the dance?

Who is eater,
who gets eaten?

Who takes,
who gives back?

(c) Tom Montag

The seen and the unseen
That which is above ground, that which is below
Balance and counter-balance
Substance and shadow
Reality and fantasy
Tweaked by the imagination and software
To form Fred's fertile phantom fake

OK, I'll play. Here are some haiku inspired by your beautiful picture...

From the soil reach up
Draw strength from within before
Breaking free, soaring

Photosynthesis
Branch into phloem to roots
Carbon stored in soil

Sap warming, flowing
Tapping, dripping, catching, boil
Maple syrup. Yum.

GACK I need more caffeine!

thanks, fred, for the inspiration. Here's how I play along ... p.s. thanks for giving me an excuse to create something

feathered strands of icy strength
reaching up to touch the air
bones that yield to swirling winds
and braches that were never there

underneath this brittle base
lives a world of twists and turns
where single strands can hold the weight
of empty fires that never burn

within this world of shadowed strength
lives the truth of all we know
reflections of our deepest fears
entwined within the tangled growth

reaching upward, and below
we search and find our hidden song
allowed to grow with every branch
our wounded souls will now be strong

when first we see the light of day
we must not shade our eyes
from the past that brought us here
as our roots have touched the skies

all in all, we’ve come to know
that what we see is just the start
of a life that’s lived with truth
within the branches of our heart

reach out today and touch the roots
of all you’ve ever known
please do not lose the future
lest you lose the seeds you’ve sown

to grow within no boundaries
means living from the inside out
letting all that ever was, and is
become everything that you’re about

so live today by embracing both
the empty fires and brittle bones
for surely when your roots have withered
your branches will have grown

they’ll touch the sky, and then you’ll know
that life and truth begin
when your moments become branches
and your hopes burn from within

sorry ... I meant to add my contribution on naming your image ... my vote is cast for:

"Potential Reflections"

thanks for letting me play along

thanks for helping the juices flow

thanks for begin fred

Reaching up toward the future
Reaching down to touch the past
Reaching out to embrace the moment
Reaching, reaching.
