Readers Radio Theatre

First of all, let me just confess that the neatest part of this message is the little banner up there, created by the online Acme Label Maker. Thank you folks, that was fun. But here's the lesser news: The Fragments staff is pleased to announce our tenth "essay" to air tomorrow on WVTF if anybody's got three minutes to spare during the busiest part of your Friday morning.
And I must tell you that there was considerable controversy about this one before the decision was reached where all parties (in particular the one with the two X chromosomes) agreed to make this subject matter public. Also, I will warn you that there is a bedroom scene. And there is conflict. But in the end, sensual moans of satisfaction presage a happy ending.

We tuned in and loved hearing your voice again. What a hilarious topic. Very well done, Fred!!

Loved it Fred! So nice too to hear a voice to go with the picture.
We have a different solutions to the same issue - his'n'hers duvets. I sleep year round under a thin summer-weight duvet, she sleeps year-round under a thick winter-weight one, with a hot water bottle as well. Peace and harmony reigns once more...
And the cat goes just wherever he can find a space.

That was very entertaining Fred. Finally! I managed to catch one of those broadcasts.
I'm so glad you and your wife found a solution.
After 33 years, my wife and I simply gave up hope and adapted to separate sleeping areas. Our old queen-sized bed is now where she, the dog and the cat slumber, while Old Dad slips away to the couch with it's extra, added foam padding to cushion the too-firm spots. I could not deal with her hot flashes. Neither of us could stand the snoring of the other. Then came the night we tried sleeping head to foot, her under the heavy comforter, me on top with a light, thermal blanket and during the night, I had a nightmare and almost kicked her right ear off. That was the straw that broke the camel's back. I feared doing her lasting injury in my sleep and thought it best that we part company. I'm entering my second year on the couch, sleeping fitfully one to two hours at a time and then prowling around the house at all hours, searching out snacks, drinks and company on the Internet. I can't say how many times your words have filled up my idle hours of midnight wandering and my contemplative mental activities. And NOW...I have heard your writing voice spoken out loud.

Brilliant! And very very funny. However, what is an "ah-land"? (ho ho ho)

I'm still grinning on this rainy morning. Thanks, Fred! But it would be sad if this clever solution has totally ended the nocturnal migrations. . .
p.s. Our solution is cotton knit sheets -- soft and cozy year round without being hot like flannel or glacial like cotton.

Hi Fred,
I've browsed your blog from time to time and was pleasantly surprised to hear your essay and your blog mentioned this morning. I was lying in bed (cotton sheets) with my own spouse (of 22 years). Our solution is that in winter she wears a flannel gown. Works for us.
Keep up the good blogging about our beautiful region. I'm one of the folks who enjoys the Blue Ridge by motorcycle and hiking.
Take care, and stay warm,
Chris

Listening to NPR this morning was GREAT! I was very entertained by your radio essay--I would love to have a copy of it. Is that possible? I cannot find it on this site yet--will you be posting the full text? (Or an audio copy?!) I surely hope so!!!

I'm with you, Clarence! His'n'hers rooms. In Iceland, I met a couple (she a weaver and reputedly the founder of Icelandic feminism and he a member of parliament, who had side-by-side HOUSES. My summer alone in my van spoiled me forever. I like to go to sleep listening to someone talking, wake up to the news, turn on the light whenever I feel like it, and wear the covers up to my chin. He likes silence, but of course he doesn't hear his own snoring, and dark and gets up hours after me. He got the good Queen. Works for us!

grrrrr ... I was SO wanting to tune in, and didn't get to ... but from the comments here, I can gather the gist of the threads that were woven into your broadcast (although to hear your voice would have been a real treat).
as for me and mine (or what was once mine), we eventually took to separate beds. He couldn't take the 24/7 fan and background noise, and I wasn't into the roaring snories. For some reason, he never understood why I had to have the blanket with the purple (not pink) side facing up ...
... can you imagine?
no sleep could be had til the pink side touched me and the purple shone into the darkness ... how is it that he couldn't understand this? (even today, I smile)
all these (divorced) years later, and that is one of the things I miss the most ... someone who would actually get up and flip the blanket in the middle of the night because the neurotic spouse said the purple was on the wrong side!
