I can't speak yet to respond properly to the many incredible comments, but thank you, Fred. And, please, do make sure you know where Tsuga is if she is outdoors. Turns out, unbeknownst to us, we have a very large coyote den not 60 steps from the lights out our back door. Apparently hunting pressure from the other side of the mountain drove them here.(We know that from speaking to an old head in the cove.) They are getting very aggressive, even in the daytime. Maggie can smell them and wants to go up there. She is at my feet right now. Hate to restrict her freedom, but we can't stand another loss. She led Buck to Whitney. I don't see too well, but do have "bat ears" and the sounds I have been hearing (ground pounding) have most likely been them. We fired off a cap pistol today. Maggie went crazy, and I heard running feet.
It was uncharacteristic of me, in the midst of tremendous emotional upset, to put it all out there on a blog. Guess I must trust you guys intuitively. Clearly, rightly placed.
Comments
That is heart breaking.
When I saw your comment I thought something had happened to Tsuga.
