Zoned and Alarmed

Okay. So far, a lot of astintions, and one vote NO to Outlook. I still can't find much in the way of unbiased discussion of the program as a PIM, except "use it mostly for the email and it's a yawner for everything else".

So what about Zone Alarm? How necessary, over and above what Norton System Works can do? And how prone to screw other things up will I be if I install the Preview version of Zone Alarm? Any experience?

Long-time satisfied Zone Alarm customer here. I use the freebie, hubby uses the pro, and neither of us has ever had a problem. My guru: Fred Langa. Oh... and howdy Fred!

I used ZoneAlarm for a couple years and never experienced any problems with it. However, now I have a router with a firewall which does not like ZoneAlarm.

I run Zone Alarm Pro. Get the Pro version, it has a very good pop-up and banner filter. Norton's System Works is a bloat victim and IMO isn't necessary with XP...which has all the system tools you need...you just have to find them. *G*

You should also run Ad-aware to weed out the data miners...it's free.

If you want to see if you need a firewall try Steve Gibson's Shields Up.

An invaluable resource is Bob O'Donnell's site, Everything About Computers. O'Donnell is a well-known Bay Area geek, tech writer and radio host. His Saturday morning computer talk show is a must around the Feste manse. He runs a live chatroom during broadcast and is a ton of fun...a huge store of knowledge too. Bob has excellent referrals on his site. He has also published several useful books.
