Name That Insect

I'd be interested to see how long it takes for the first Fragments visitor to correctly identify the creature up on the left side of the header. The timer... starts.... NOW!

(And Ron Bailey, you can't play. We already had this discussion!)

That'd be the friend of the south .. the Cicada ... sometimes their sound is overpowering, and othertimes it's eerily quiet with out it.

Yeah, those drove us stark raving nuts when we went camping last year, they were on their seven year cycle or some such. The only fun part about cicadas was when one landed on my wife...

I was going to say Cicada, too. AKA Seventeen Year Locust.

I believe they are edible, you know!

Yep, Big and scary with a voracious appetite! And don't forget noisy!

Last year we had the 13 year cycle cicadas come to life here in Western Kentucky. We are surrounded by woods and it was quite deafening for about 3 weeks. All day, non-stop. Though the children and I enjoyed watching several emerge from their casings, I was not sorry to see them go.

The only damage done was to the underside of small tree branches, where they slit the outer layers to lay their eggs. Most branches healed but some were weakened and broke in subsequent storms.

Looks like a Black Prince cicada to my downunder eyes. Definitely not a green grocer or yellow mundey.
Shalom, Jan
