Staying Alive

Image copyright Fred First
Today is our 34th wedding anniversary. As we woke up to the whippoorwill's call through the open window, I became aware of this symbolic testimony to our long lives together: the velcro of her black wrist brace and mine were intertwined as our arms lay there side by side under the cool sheets. But there were no teeth in jars beside the bed. No assistive devices were needed to reach the kitchen and the coffee pot. And I didn't have to get up and put my hair on. We've voted each other off the island a few times over the years, but stayed together as the cruelest form of getting even. I suppose, all things considered, for better or for worse, in want and in plenty, as spousal relationships go these days, we're in pretty good shape for the shape we're in.

We have some tiny travel plans for the weekend, so I'll be out of the Control Center here on Saturday. Meanwhile, if you want to follow me down memory lane, here's the way we were. Two years ago, I forgot our anniversary. Last year I remembered.

Y'all stay outta trouble, ya hear?

That's almost as long as I've been alive ;)

Congratulations.

Congratulations! I laughed at loud at your mention of voting one another off the island...how true! ;-) Here's wishing the both of your many more years *together* on your creekside "island."

Happy 34th!

Our next-door neighbors were to celebrate their anniversary today, too, but yesterday afternoon, as they started out for a walk in the neighborhood, he collapsed and died of a massive heart attack. Despite CPR, which a passing UPS driver started almost immediately, and paramedics who got here 5 minutes later. This was totally out of the blue - he was a thin, fit, non-smoking, 66-year-old.

Sorry for such a downer, but just wanted to say - so trite but true - appreciate every day of your life together.

Happy Anniversary!

We're approaching our 40th in the fall, so I know exactly what you mean...you become angry or withdrawn over issues small and large. Then you see their sleepy face in the early morning light, or hear the lilt of their laugh and you get over it and life goes on.

We were very touched by Nancy Reagan this week, I think anyone with a long standing relationship was instantly projected into her shoes for a few moments and we have been much more tender with each other this week.

Happy Anniversary my dear, dear friend. I wish the both of you many more.

Congratulations. We're about to celebrate our 30th ourselves, so 34 seems eminently reachable.

Ya' just got to keep your perspective!

Enjoy.

I haven't been making the rounds lately, and so it was a triple treat to come here and find not one, or two, but three stories that you were sharing about June 11th. Happy Anniversary to you both, this year and every year.

Really amazing it's lasted at all, considering you were married at the age of 10 (judging by the picture anyway!) Congratulations. Remember, "he who laughs, lasts."
