Free Speech and Foghorns

A good overview of the Chris Hedges debacle at Rockford College. And a transcript of his speech from the Rockford Register, interspersed with boos, foghorns and other civilized forms of dialogue.

I'll not pretend to agree with each point the man was making. But at your college commencement, would you have booed? Is this okay in the New American Century?

I certainly would have booed THIS clown. His speech is entirely out of context, makes absolutely no attempt to tie into the important occasion on which the speech is given, and is merely a diatribe. He used the opportunity to grandstand his views on the war. I'm not surprised the students and parents were incensed.

There is probably another dynamic at work in their reaction to Hedges: the feeling that the college was using the commencement ceremony as one last attempt to inject a final dose of political correctness and liberal apologia into the educational process. I'm getting angry just thinking about having to sit and endure this kind of tripe at my own graduation...I probably would have walked out and had the diploma mailed to me.

Foghorns. Sigh. The last SF Bay foghorn went some years back. I miss them. We can hear the trains whistling through town on a warm evening...it's still magical...nuttin sez mystery like a foghorn AND a distant train whistle in the night.
