S(he) Who is Ignorant of History

Franco, Hitler, and Mussolini in the 20th century undertook an attempt to overthrow republican democracy and replace it with a worldwide feudal state. They first called it "corporatism", but later changed it to "fascism".

The American Heritage Dictionary (Houghton Mifflin Company) 1983 defines "fas-cism (fash'iz'em) n. : A system of government that exercises a dictatorship of the extreme right, typically through the merging of state and business leadership, together with belligerent nationalism."

There is nothing new under the sun.

Perhaps an Italian dictionary offers a less PC loaded meaning? For example; (excuse my translation)

Etymology: Italian fascismo, from fascio bundle, fasces, group, from Latin fascis bundle & fasces fasces

1. often capitalized: a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

2: a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control.

Pretty much describes Saddam Hussein's regime does it not? and Fidel Castro.

Autocrats occur on both sides of the political spectrum. One might venture to say that the nations schools and universities might also be described as autocratic. Trade unions are also very much an autocratic group (facses) that endorses only one political opinion and openly discourages dissent.

Your local county planning authority as you have described them might also be thought to be autocratic.

I Fascisti come in many forms and flavors...do not be fooled that they are only of the political right...that's what makes them so dangerous to individual freedom.

What's wrong with being a fascist if I am always correct and am just saving everyone else the trouble of suffering while they realize it?

What's interesting about the 1983 definition is how it contrasts with the definition from the same dictionary, 2000 edition :

"A system of government marked by a totalitarian dictator, socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition, and usu. a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism."

The mention of the crucial business connection vanishes...
