Iraq War 'Unjustifiable', says Bush's Church Head
by Ed Vulliamy in New York

President George Bush's own Methodist church has launched a scathing attack on his preparations for war against Iraq, saying they are 'without any justification according to the teachings of Christ'.

Jim Winkler, head of social policy for United Methodists, added that all attempts at a 'dialogue' between the President and his own church over the war had fallen on deaf ears at the White House. [...]

Winkler said his church was 'keenly aware' that it counted the President and his deputy among its members, and that he was therefore 'frequently encouraged by others to be very careful about how I say things'.

And all this time I had no idea that we were running the country according to the teachings of Christ.

The apple falls not far from the tree. Leading up to the Earlier Attempt on Iraq, under Bush the Elder, that one's (Episcopal) Bishop, by whom I was employed, called the White House near daily. Once the President showed the Bishop a Human Rights Report on Kuwait. They prayed together, they talked.

As was reported to the staff the next day by the Bishop - On the Day the Bombing Began, we knew because our military chaplains called us and told us they were being mobilized. The Bishop called the President. The President answered the phone in the Oval OFfice and said, "I don't have time to talk to you, talk to Barbara, she's the religious one."
